Our Programs

Danju - Jobs Together

The Leschenault Catchment Council sees great value in working collaboratively with Noongar people as the Traditional Custodians of the land. They hold strong connections to the land we work on and there are great benefits gained from local traditional knowledge.

Danju -Jobs Together is building skills and job opportunities for local Noongar people. Local Noongar people are connected to Country, trained and mentored to undertake on-ground landcare, conservation and forestry work.

The program is designed to benefit the individuals involved, through mentoring into the workforce; cultivating community and friendships; involvement in outdoor, physical activities; plus, a steady stream of paid work opportunities.

Leschenault Estuary Connect

Leschenault Estuary Connect is an innovative strategic and behavioural change program aimed at connecting and engaging the Leschenault community to protect and enhance the Leschenault Estuary for future generations. The program brings together community, key business partners and State and local government stakeholders in a program of awareness raising, engagement and local action to protect the natural and cultural values of the estuary.

The program includes Noongar people, scientists and artists sharing knowledge and stories about the estuary, community awareness raising presentations and workshops and a Friends of the Estuary Program of community volunteering and citizen science. Through the program LCC aims to foster community stewardship where community members value, respect, and care for the estuary.

Wildlife for the Future

Wildlife for the Future recognises that many unique fauna species are currently threatened and at risk in the Leschenault Catchment and that these species are often indicators of the health of our waterways and our catchment.

The program will raise public awareness of the conservation status of threatened species and how the community can help their recovery. Restoration activities will be undertaken to enhance critical habitats and where possible community members will be involved in citizen science to increase understanding of species distribution.

Outcomes will be achieved in partnership with State government agencies and community organisations and in accordance with recovery plans for threatened species.

Restoring our Waterways

Restoring Our Waterways focuses on protecting and restoring the Collie, Brunswick and Preston Rivers that feed the Leschenault Estuary. Maintaining the health of these systems is vital to maintaining the health of the Leschenault Estuary and the catchment.

This program will focus on maintaining and enhancing foreshore vegetation as a filter for nutrients and pollutants, to reduce riverbank erosion and to provide habitat for local wildlife. In degraded areas attention will also be paid to restoring riverine function and instream habitats.

Outcomes in the program will be achieved through partnership with local traditional custodians, local government, businesses, and local communities. Community volunteers will be engaged in foreshore restoration to build skills and knowledge across our community.

Catchment Stewardship

Catchment Stewardship recognises that the local farmers and landholders have a part to play in caring for the land, flora and fauna and waterways within the catchment.

The program aims to raise awareness of catchment issues and solutions and increase skills and knowledge in best practice sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. The focus will be to provide advice, and opportunities for farmers and landholders to network and share information.

LCC will initially work with the Healthy Estuaries WA Program providing opportunities for stream restoration, soil testing and learning about best practice sustainable agriculture. LCC hopes to build its offering to farmers and landholders providing a practical hands-on catchment stewardship program and a way everyone can take meaningful action for the health of the catchment.
